What is a tweenager?

Well, I pretty much have no desire to write, but I don't want to mooch off of other peoples' journals, so I will write one of my own.

This week was ok. To be honest, I spent the better part of it thinking about having a baby and lately I've had a pretty hard time focusing 100% on school. I was so excited on Thursday when I thought that they were going to induce Kristi. I mean, it really felt like a weight had been lifted off my shoulders. I was pretty dang disappointed when they said that they were going to wait because her cervix wasn't ready. Oh well. I thought the baby would come last week for sure, but it looks more and more like it will be this week, which would be great considering the fact that I only have one day of class this week.

The worst part of this "overdueness" is the guilt that gets worse with each passing day. I'm leaving on March 6th, and if Kristi goes into labor now, the baby won't even be three weeks old by the time I leave. I thought "well, she'll have the baby on her due date, so the baby will be about a month old when I leave." Man, I was way off. Anyway, the sooner the baby comes, the less guilty I'll feel. That may sound totally insensative, and thats because it absolutely is. Sorry.

This weekend was pretty nice. Kristi and I did something on a date that we had never done before: we went to a chinese restaurant. I'm not sure why we ended up going there, but the food was pretty good. I ended up getting kung pao chicken over rice noodles and it was great. I also ended up getting some pretty major stomach pains that night, followed by serious BU on Saturday morning. We topped off the evening by heading to the bookstore to catch up on our magazine reading. I also looked at "The Road" by Cormac McCarthy, but it was too expensive. Why are books so expensive anyway? I mean, I get the whole supply/demand analysis, but are books really that popular that they can charge like $20 for a hardcover?

On Saturday I spent most of the morning getting the yard ready for our bbq and working on getting my garden ready for the manure. I had this idea on Friday that since the weather was so nice, that we would invite over a few couples from the ward and just hang out and eat. So, yesterday afternoon they came over, the kids played, and we sat around eating burgers. hot dogs, and a bit of steak and just talked. It was great. The wind had blown quite a bit in the morning, so all of the smog was swept out of the valley and you could see all the way across to the other side from out back yard. The last couple left about five hours after the "party" started and I think both Kristi and I were exhausted because we went to bed pretty early.

Today I let Kristi rest at home and I took Adam over to the grandparents's house. They both seemed to be doing well and Grandpa gave me some good gardening tips so my garden won't be a total disaster like it was last year. Grandma looked a lot better than I have seen here lately and she didn't even fall asleep while I was over there. They have the perfect backyard for kids. I think I could probably let Adblow run around out there and he would be happy for hours. It would be nice if he had some cousins around here to play outside with. Oh well, I guess I'll just have to wait for Brody to get bigger so they can play together.

Anyway, I'll let you know when the baby comes. Hopefully it will be in the next couple of days.

Books

Dear Tyler,

Truthfully, we really don't think that you got the whole supply/demand analysis at all.

Sincerely,

Your Econ professors

Re: Books

Your econ professors clearly don't know anything about the book industry, so I'll tell you about it.

In most retail industries, when an item doesn't sell, it gets marked down until someone buys it. The book industry generally doesn't operate this way. The demand for a book is almost impossible to forecast, so most publishers front-load a lot of inventory on booksellers, like Borders or Barnes & Noble. When books don't sell, the booksellers can send them back to the publishers (or their distributors) at any time. All this movement is very costly, especially when you consider the fact that books are pretty heavy. Finally, when books get back to the publishers or distributors, they're often destroyed. So, when you get charged a lot for a book, you're not only paying for the content in the book, you're paying for all the logistics and distribution costs, too. It's a very inefficient, low margin business model. That's why mom and pop bookstores are becoming something of a rarity, why Amazon can offer lower prices (it can turn inventory more quickly because it doesn't have to ship it to retail locations, and thus doesn't have to hold as much ) and also why you see bookstores branching out into other types of products (movies, CDs, etc.) in order to drive business.

I would actually think that Brian would be more interested in this than anyone else in the family.

Guilt

Truthfully, I don't think you'll know what guilt is until you get home and Crisco is totally bitter that you left her alone with Adbo and a brand new baby.

Re: Guilt

I'm going to have to agree with John on this one. What were you thinking?

Re: Guilt

The timing is a little bad, but I applaud Tyler for continuing to live his life and doing something fun. I see too many people that feel like they can't do anything because of their kids. Balancing personal and child interests is commendable.

Re: Guilt

I don't think the issue is having fun, I think it's more an issue of Tyler being home to support Crisco. Having a newborn baby is pretty tough alone, let alone with Adbo running around and causing destruction.

By the way, do you applaud me for continuing to play large amounts of video games with a newborn in the house. Personally, I think I deserve a medal.

Re: Guilt

That is very admirable. Well done. Apparently Kelly's not taking issue with that?

Umm, let's not go that far.

Re: Guilt

Here's what I was thinking:

Four days in tropical Vero Beach with the bros watching baseball and seeing former players that I have idolized my entire life. This is something that I have wanted to do forever, and this is either the last year or the second to last year that they will be in Vero. I know this seems crazy to most of you, but this will be one of the coolest things I have ever done. It just happened to be at a pretty bad time in terms of kids.

Dear Tyler,

We totally agree with you. It's totally OK to put your own selfish desires above the desires of your family.

Re: Guilt

Tyler-

Doing everything that your wife wants you to do definitely won't make you miserable in the long run.

Sincerely,

Ric

Re: Guilt

The last time I checked, you were nowhere close to doing everything Crisco wants you to do. If so, you'd be wearing a lot more clothes from Banana Republic.
